The start of another tour in Australia. The boat crew picks us up from the described meeting point at Abel Point Marina, a 10 minutes scenic walk from the town centre of Airlie Beach. We get aboard and get shown to our cabins: beautifully made with crisp white linen. After a short briefing about water, power, toilet use and a few other things aboard boats while we are heading out of Airlie, we are off and sailing. An hour later the sun is setting over the mainland mountains and the crew brings out some snacks. I am treating myself to a glass of wine while our Skipper explains that we are to spend the night anchored in a place called Nara Inlet of Hook Island. When we arrive, the scenery is like a Fjord and I am glad to recognise that the boat is hardly moving anchored. Should be a pleasant night. The other guests aboard are all very nice. WE are chatting away while the stars come out. And then it’s dinner time - the food looks and tastes fabulous! I think I’ve eaten too much, but the huge plate of beef stroganoff, rice and vegetables was simply irresistible. We have some more wine and exchange travel experiences ‘late’ into the night.
After a good night’s sleep we awake to the smell of coffee. Sweet, the breakfast buffet is all ready. We tuck in, while the boat slowly heads back out to the islands. Once we come out of Hook Passage we are on the outside of the islands, the coral sea, our skipper explains. There are quite some waves out here and we have an exiting boat ride. Oops, another splash on the foredeck - a welcome refreshment. And then we are looking at Whitehaven Beach - kilometres of the whitest sand I’ve ever seen and the water is just soo turquoise. We receive an introduction to Stand Up Paddle Boarding (the crew calls it SUP) and go on a paddle along Whitehaven Beach. After a few falls I get the hang and paddle along standing up. The standing position gives me a great view of the area as well as what’s beneath me (little pale fish). It’s an amazing experience. We make a stop further down the beach and have a walk in the squeeking sand - I could stay here forever. Then it’s sadly time to head back to the boat, fortunately a great lunch is waiting.
We cruise around the corner into one of the bays of Whitsunday Island called Tongue Bay - and wow, there is huge sea turtle. The crew brings us over to Whitsunday Island where we do a 15min walk up the hill to the so called Hill Inlet Lookout. From there we have the most amazing view over Whitehaven Beach and the swirling sands of the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. We set sail again and head to a small island called Dumbbell where we do a snorkelling stop. And it’s just as amazing as everything else on the tour: fish everywhere and colourful corals. My favourite one is the fluorescent rainbow coloured parrotfish. We are going back through Hook Passage to spend the night in a bay called Stonehaven on the northern side of Hook Island. We are having yummy spring rolls while watching another sunset. Dinner this night is chicken fillet with pasta and another beautiful salad. Everyone is quite tired after an eventful day at sea and it doesn’t take me long tonight to go to bed and fall asleep. Hopefully we will find more turtles tomorrow ...
Breakfast this morning with english muffins, yum! After sailing past the Hayman Island resort we snorkel on the other side of the island, Bluepearl Bay. There’s so many fish and quite a few big parrotfish and maori wrasses. After Hayman Island we are go to what looks like a long beach lying in the water, called Langford Reef. The crew points out where we could find turtles, so I am going on a mission with the dive propulsion unit (or seascooter) to find one. And yes, there is one, soo close. I nearly missed it, it blends in so well with its shell. After a short while it wakes upand I swim with it for a bit until it takes off amazingly fast. Then it’s unfortunately time to commence a few hours journey head back, not without having an exiting sail again, though. What a great way to see the islands. We are sitting on the side of the boat, our feet dangling over and having delicious sandwich rolls. Once back in the marina, we are kind of sad to leave our new home the Blizzard. This is certainly a tour I would be happy to do again - and longer. But I have to catch my next tour further south ...

Experience the Blizzard Difference
Sail More and See more:
Sailing has come along way since the olden days, the latest boats sail easier and faster. Better sailing performance means Blizzard uses the sails more and the motor less. Blizzard is one of the few whitsunday vessels to carry a spinnaker sail, allowing sailing when the winds arenʼt so strong.
Bllizzardʼs crew are keen snorkelers and know all the best spots. Guests can either swim to the reef from the boat or be taken in our 30 hp Inflatable rescue boat. A guest/crew ratio of 5:1 means everyone from advanced snorkelers to 1st timers are well catered for. We snorkel at least 2 of the best whitsunday reefs and spend plenty of time at them.
Whitehaven Beach and the lookout:
The highlight of many guests trip . We do our best to make sure our whitehaven experience is the best it can be. More often than not we can find a section of whitehaven beach all to ourselves far away from the other boats. We spend at least 2 hours at this queen amongst beaches and get the lookout at the best possible tide.
Stand up Paddle boarding.
Blizzardʼs co - owner Luke Mairs was introduced to stand up paddling by an old friend 3 years ago and straight away saw the potential for it on his whitsunday tours.“ Itʼs addictive, there is a pleasure which comes from been on a paddle board that is indescribable. Standing up paddling is heaps more fun than siting on the soggy floor of a kayak and because of your higher perspective you see way more too”
Who hasnʼt watched a James Bond film, as the legendary special agent zooms about underwater on his sea scooter, and thought Mmmmm “I could do that”. Well now is your chance. Our top of the line Bladefish scooters allow the experienced snorkeler unknown freedom to dive amongst the coral and fishes or can provide the weakest swimmer with ability in the water they never thought possible.
There is nothing wrong with siting on the beach with a book. But its not for everyone. Active guests can get a taste of what kitesurfing is all about. We start off on the beach learning about the power zone and the wind window with smaller kites, then progress to bigger kites and body dragging through the water. This is amazing fun that provokes ear to ear smiles even on wet days.
